Red Room

Our children aged between 3-5 access the provision within Red Base (Foundation 1) at Wheeler Primary. These are the children that access their 3-4 Year Funding, both the Universal 15 hours; which all children are entitled to, and the Extended Hours, which make your entitlement up to 30 Hours of childcare a week. Please be aware that there are certain criteria to ensure eligibility for the Extended Hours and all parents must apply via the government web site. If you are unsure of this please speak to a member of staff.

Although we have two practitioners, who are the children’s key workers, the overall provision for our 3 & 4 year olds is teacher led. Miss Kenyon, who is the Foundation Stage 1 teacher at Wheeler Primary School, leads the children’s learning and development. They access Little Wandle Phonics, extended number work and begin to recognise and write their own names.

The children will follow a variety of topics which is incorporated into their everyday play in the setting. The children in the Red Room always come into our setting through our main door in the Rainbow Centre, they then walk across to the school with their key workers, holding onto the ‘walking rope’.

The children will spend the majority of their day at the school, including lunchtime. Our Red room children eat their lunch in their own room; this enables key workers to spend some quality time with the children promoting positive social skills, table manners and the use of cutlery. Their lunches are prepared at the Rainbow Centre Cafe and brought across to the school for the children.

The children will then return to the setting within the Rainbow Centre for tea time and collection. Whilst the overall day is teacher led it is the responsibility of our practitioners to observe the children, documenting their learning, continuing their ‘Tapestry’ journals and planning activities that promote their development and learning.
