Maths

Intent
At Wheeler, our intent is to ensure every child develops a deep, lasting and secure understanding of mathematics. We aim to foster a love of maths and equip pupils with the skills to reason, problem-solve and think logically. We use the White Rose small steps as the spine for our curriculum from EYFS - Y6. Teachers use these small steps to carefully craft sequences of learning, tailored to our own Calculation Policy and lessons using purposefully chosen images, representations and resources.
Implementation
Maths lessons at Wheeler include an arithmetic focused starter and a check on previous learning that is needed in that lesson, before teachers explain and model a concept. Pupils are then given opportunity to practise - this may be guided to begin with before moving to working independently. The learning of a new mathematical concept is underpinned by a CPA approach (Concrete -> Pictorial -> Abstract). All pupils have the opportunity to reason and problem solve orally in each Maths lesson.
